Finding momentum in the chaos of design

In my experience as a designer, I've learned that the design process is rarely a straight path. It often winds through unexpected twists and turns despite meticulous planning. To navigate the chaos and keep projects moving forward, I've implemented a few strategies that help me streamline the process and foster effective collaboration. Here’s how I turn the messiness into momentum and drive projects toward success.

Knowledge management system

I’ve had the chance to dive into some fascinating industries like health tech and aerospace, but I didn’t begin these roles as an expert—quite the opposite, in fact. Each new job comes with its own learning curve, and working in highly regulated fields adds an extra layer of complexity. To tackle this chaos and effectively manage the flood of new information, I’ve implemented a knowledge management system using Obsidian. This system acts like a second brain, allowing me to navigate, explore, and recall crucial details about users, insights, and workflows. It’s been an invaluable tool for turning the overwhelming into the manageable and staying on top of the intricate details.

Analog to digital

Working in an environment where ideas constantly evolve and shift, I use analog and digital methods as a way to bridge the gap between initial inspiration and final execution. Using pen and paper, I try to capture ideas and notes that might otherwise get lost in the sheer volume of details in a project. This hands on approach of "thinking while making" allows me to explore concepts in their rawest form and discover unexpected insights. Once my ideas are fully fleshed out on paper, I transition to digital formats to refine, expand, and share my designs. This blend of analog spontaneity and digital precision ensures that my projects are both innovative and meticulously polished.

Communication driven

Communication is at the heart of my approach, and I understand that there is no one-size-fits-all method when engaging with a diverse range of people. Whether I’m talking to developers, marketing teams, or C-level executives, I adapt my communication style to fit the audience. This means including extra notes during the development handoff to setting up weekly touchpoints with team members to provide clear guidance and support. By customizing my approach, I facilitate the design process, preventing miscommunication and keeping everyone on the same page.
